A pioneer in the development of genetic approaches to the pathobiology of aging in human subjects, his work led to the characterization of mutations leading to accelerated onsets of a range of disorders of aging and the importance of genomic instability as a mechanism of aging. His awards have included the Pruzanski Award of the American College of Medical Genetics, a World Alzheimer Congress Lifetime Achievement Award, and membership in the National Academy of Medicine.
